Monemvasia is one of the archaeological and architectural highlights of the Peloponnese. Although 330 km away from Athens International Airport, it is easily accessible by bus or private car. The journey lasts between 3 and 4 hours. It is therefore both near and far enough to be of easy access, but remain a peaceful destination. Visitors particularly appreciate the Kastro for its enchanting and romantic side. Monemvasia is surrounded by a region of wild nature, with many hilltop villages, olive and fig trees and beaches with turquoise water. The Kastro of Monemvasia is a destination in itself. Monuments and churches are scattered throughout the old town. An important archaelogical collection is housed in the museum, a previous mosque, in the Square of Elkomenos Christos. One can walk through the little alleyways, swim and relax by the sea (at the Portello, a platform just at the footstep of the fortress), enjoy a late drink facing the sea, or climb to the Upper Town to see the old ruins, the glorious church of Agia Sofia, and feel lost between the sky and the sea. -Average summer temperature is 25 C. Clear blue skies up to 300 days a year -Monemvasia has been known ever since the 12th century for its beautiful vineyards and the famous Malvasia wine (later known as Malmsey in Shakespeare's plays). -Within a short driving distance one can visit Sparta, Elafonissos, Mani, Kythera and other unique destinations (Gerakas, Kyparissi)
